Plasma TV repair pro
Trying to fix a Plasma TV (Philips 42PF7320A/37). Had the notorious 7-red-blink power-supply failure. (This is over a two-year period, so the details may be slightly-off and/or out of order). Found two dead FETs on the Y-Main/Y-Sus. After cutting them out of the circuit, I got this undulating red blob. They got quite hot, so I ordered and soldered in replacements and was right back to the red blob for a while before one blew again. Cut it out of the circuit and tried again, noticed something was wrong, turned off quickly, found that the lower Y-buf was shorted. Waited for a while before coming back: Removed the lower Y-buf from the circuit, also noticed two blown/bloated caps on the power supply to the digital board, replaced. Hooked it all back up and this is what I get, same as two years ago when I cut those first FETs: The "red undulating blob of doom." (Well, only half now, since the lower y-buf has been removed). Yesterday, finally found a user-manual and figured out how to change the input... (AV+ Down OK, repeat) seen ~halfway through the video. Added a fan to the FETs and they don't even get finger-warm anymore... might never replace that heatsink. Watching the Simpsons movie, I swear I *almost* saw Homer's face in there a couple times, might just be my imagination. Some more details: All voltages are in range. However, V-Scan fluctuates ~10V (via multimeter) in time with the flickering. If I remove the X-main from the circuit this fluctuation drops to ~1V, but ...
