The bottom line spin on this particular information seemed to be that we haven't seen anything yet, and that America is just one supply shock away from a full-blown food crisis that would make the price spikes of 2012 look like a happy memory. Prices Up All Over In 2012, the price of corn rose 63%, wheat rose 84%, soybeans 24% and sugar prices were up 55%. Some of the reasons for the increase in food prices included Russia's failed wheat harvest which resulted in a ban on grain exports through the end of 2012 (Russia exports a full quarter of the world's supplies of wheat). In America, Midwestern floods in June followed by hot, dry weather in August, caused the USDA to predict a 3.4% decline in corn production from 2012, causing further price spikes.
